An ode to Marred Manhood…
~Maria Syed
A burning flame,
a yearning heart,
a man’s world today is torn apart.
Expected to be soft and sensitive,
more agreeable, less assertive,
more apologetic and less defensive,
wearing “nice guy” as their name tag
otherwise, you are a “red flag”,
deep down they all know,
it is all but a façade.
By the power vested in me by my creator,
I have tried to capture, the essence of manhood
That is found in texts and scripture…
A heart made for wilderness
A mind made for wanderlust
Arms made for sword
Feet made for dust.
A fist made to fight
born with an insatiable longing for battle
a man is, at heart, a knight.
Win or lose, but compete
A fuel for the heart to beat
For man is created from untamed earth
Danger, frontier, endeavor
An ancient urge, received at birth.
The core yearns for something wild,
Something on the edge, not in the mild
Not in screens, lounges or comfort
But in streams, mountains and burning desert.
Where the rhythm of the heart
Dances with rhythm of the earth.
Not in tracking stocks or drawing chart
But in climbing rocks or chopping a log apart.
Something coarse, the hands crave to caress
Not smartphones, files, or catalogues,
But the roughness of ropes and the swing of an axe.
A father can mother, they say,
to me, that’s motherhood gone astray,
for the moonbeam,
however so soothing,
cannot cause a flower to bloom,
unmatched is the sunlight of a mother
who carries the bud in her womb.
Marred with accuses, defamed of toxicity,
Gallantry, audacity, nerve, and valor
compelled to cover under a gentle guise
The Creator strengthened to provide and protect,
Masculinity, a virtue disgraced as vice.
Guilted for not being emotional,
But when they are
People cannot handle,
For emotions do not always
Fall down in form of saline water,
Anger, frustration, distress and solemnity,
The hombre spirit expresses
in full-spectrum of complexity.
Robbed of rights, respect, identity, and worth
The need to be needed gotten stole.
Scarred the savage spirit, that breathed at birth,
Man, and his virile soul.
Veiled as choice, in truth a wile
All By those behind closed doors,
Whom sees none, who sees all,
Satan and his covert guile.
Alas!
Breached, the decree of Devine
The Son of Adam has finally fallen
For the one created from his rib,
At last, managed to break his spine!
Manhood, a fierce flame
Supposed to glow,
suppressed to shame,
a flame claimed by almighty,
to fill in the chest of half of humanity,
this masculine flare, a scarlet searing
once meant to light the world,
is now blamed for burning!
